Fairfax Senior High School Being Rebuilt and Remodeled

Students were amazed and overjoyed when they returned to school to find the cafeteria renovated, the parking lot refinished, and the A and wings are open. It was the new cafeteria that seemed to generate the most enthusiasm.  “We wanted the dining area to be really special for the kids because this is an important gathering spot,” says Fairfax High’s Principal Scott Brabrand, pointing out his favorite touches: the monogrammed booths that run along the periphery of the room and the new skylights that for the first time let natural light shine in. “I’m really pleased with how it turned out.” Students agree.

“I couldn’t believe how great the cafeteria looked when I walked in for the first time,” says student body president Alice Riley-Ryan. “What a difference!” The renovation of Fairfax High is nearly complete, and that is giving everyone — from students to school officials and area residents — cause for celebration. “We are so thrilled with all the progress that has been made this summer,” says Fairfax City School Board Chairman Janice Miller. “I walked through the building to show it off to local officials in September and everyone was amazed at how beautiful everything looks. It’s a far cry from the dark, closed halls and classrooms we have lived with for the last three decades.”

Architect Bill Brown of BeeryRio Architecture + Design says throughout this school year crews will focus on the new two-story entrance of the school. “It will be fun to watch as this part of the school goes from a concrete foundation to being complete,” says Brown, noting that he expects the entrance to be ready to close in by winter break.  “After that, the entrance should start taking shape pretty quickly. It’ll be a real milestone when this area is finished.” The main and administration offices will be located in this new section, and the library will be located directly above it on a new second story.
