Plumbers and Pipefitters

Most persons have had an experience with a plumber in their lives when they needed help unclogging a drain. However, plumbers are not simply there to unclog drains. Plumbers also can install and maintain multiple piping systems, and many of these workers serve as pipelayers, pipefitters, and steamfitters.

Pipe workers are vitally important for the continued maintenance of a city. Some piping systems shuffle water from the natural source to municipal water treatment plants. From there, an intricate system of piping and plumbing flows water to commercial, residential, and public buildings. Piping and plumbing systems also are key to disposal of wastes, pumping of natural gases, and facilitating other forms of heating and cooling. Industry and manufacturing companies also heavily rely on piping to facilitate their production lines.

Other industries, such as silicone valley and the pharmaceutical industries, use various forms of specialized piping in their manufacturing. Though pipelayers and plumbers seem to be separate jobs, the two come hand in hand. A pipelayer will lay concrete, plastic, cast-iron, or clay pipes for water mains, sewer systems, or drains. To lay the pipeline, pipelayers must use machines or manual labor to grade trenches for the pipes to lie. The final additions of a pipelayers job include securely joining the pieces of the pipe together using glue, cement, or some other bonding material. Plumbers, on the other hand, will work in commercial, residential, or industrial buildings helping put in and repair drainage, water and waste disposal, and gas lines.

Plumbers also install:

  • Plumbing fixtures
  • Bathtubs & Spas
  • Showers
  • Sinks
  • Toilets
  • Appliances
  • Dishwashers
  • Water Heaters

Pipefitters are somewhat different from plumbers and pipelayers. Pipefitters construct and maintain pressurized piping systems used in creating electricity, manufacturing, and in air conditioning and heating of large buildings. These complex piping systems are gradually drifting toward automated control for the regulation of these systems. Many pipefitters choose to work with only one form of piping system due to the complexity of these piping plans.
